Drafting studio at dusk with monitors showing house models

About

A Duluth studio with sawdust in the drawings.

Jamie Goettl

Carpenter first. Drafter because the drawings were never good enough.

Jamie grew up on the tools. He earned an A.A.S. in Architectural Drafting and Design at South Central College (2012–2014), then studied Construction Management and Supervision at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College (2016–2018). Years framing and finishing houses followed — Southern Minnesota, Mankato, Madison Lake, Duluth, Two Harbors, and the North Shore.

Twenty-two years of combined carpentry and architectural drafting is the whole brief for Goettl Drafting & Design LLC: drawings that survive contact with a Minnesota winter, a plan reviewer, and a framing crew.

The studio is based in Duluth. Work is taken on throughout Northern Minnesota — and remotely when the set is clear enough to draw from photos, sketches, and a good conversation.

How the work is done

CAD and 3D on the screens. Tracing paper and a scale on the desk. Wood samples on the shelf. Jamie still designs things he then builds — including a permitted 4×8 coop nicknamed The Squawk Box — because a drawing that cannot be built is just a picture.

Architectural theory is a hobby. Getting a certificate of occupancy is the job.

Territory
